The introduction of girls' rugby at West Hatch High School has seen instant success with the girls unbeaten in their first three competitive matches.

The new initiative has been launched by Head of Boys PE Ray Flowers and teacher Joella Dawkes.

Mr Flowers said: "We started the project at the tail end of last year and this year.

"The girls have worked tirelessly to get themselves up to speed with the Laws of the game, how to tackle and how to not be afraid of getting muddy!"

The girls took part in the Essex Festival of Rugby and were unbeaten in their three matches.

Ms Dawkes said: "Not only did the girls perform superbly but won all three matches, including one against William Edwards school who possess four club rugby players, a permanent link with Thurrock Ladies RFC and their Head of Girls PE is an ex-England international."

The West Hatch girls beat Boswells School by seven tries to two, Hall Mead (9-0) and William Edwards (5-2).
